Every year, for several years, there were about 15-20 couples who made their annual lake trip. We were all in our mid-20's to early-30's, we had young kids, and we were all very close. The times we shared with them, not only during the lake trips but also just day-to-day, bring back some of the best memories for the bride and me.
Days on the lake went like this - the guys played golf every morning while the ladies worked on their tans; we'd have lunch together then spend the rest of the daylight hours on the water on jet skis, wave runners or ski boats; dinner would usually be something on the grill or lasagna; then we'd sit up all hours of the night playing cards and watching movies.
One year I brought a couple of movies - Jim Carrey's Ace Ventura - Pet Detective, and Pauly Shore's Son-in-Law. Of course these were movies for the guys - the ladies would obviously not appreciate or understand high-class humor like this. We watched both movies and laughed until we cried. We quoted lines from the movies for months.
I've watched Pet Detective several times since then. I've even introduced both daughters to Ace (the edited for television version), and they loved it. This past weekend I had the opportunity to watch Son-in-Law again. I'm not sure how it happened, but Pauly Shore isn't funny any more. It's the same movie, but he's now more stupid than funny in that movie. Yes, there are some funny parts, but not nearly as many as there were 13 years ago.
And it can't have anything to do with me growing older and maturing.....
